I gave this book two stars instead of one because I might have liked it better if I had read more of it. I know his attitudes just reflected those of his time and class. If I could have gotten around his bigotry, I might have gotten to the interesting part.
good book...
This book describes Burton's adventures when he traveled west Africa. Burton was a careful observer of native customs and geography in the area. This book would be a valuable reference if one wanted to research the history on west Africa. Burton was a 20th century genius. He wrote many books, check iit out.
Burton writes well. His descriptions about the areas flora and fauna are very detailed, as are his descriptions about the terrain. The narrative was written a long time ago so it is not an easy read. I thought it was worth the effort. The only thing that stands out in this diary, and his other writings is his disdain for people of color, and the indigenous peoples of the areas he visits. It was a common view during the era in which he lived.
