OK, I'll admit I've been spoilled the past two years by my Pomegranate engagement calendars. They were wire bound with substantial board covers. My 2011 calendar, however, is a less hardy breed. The covers are heavy paper. The binding is not spiral (I honestly do not know what to call it), but it works. I keep my engagement calendar on my desk, propped open, and the paper covers are not standing up to the job (literally).Otherwise the calendar is just fine. Lovely illustrations. There is a one-page calendar for each month so that I can see an entire month at a glance (a must-have feature for me).
This will be a great calendar for anyone who does not need to keep it standing, propped open. If you keep your engangement calendar in your bag or flat on your desk, this kind of binding will perform well.
I searched stores and online for the kind of calendar I've been using but could not find one. I hope Pomegranate returns to the wire binding.

I will not be ordering The Reading Woman Engagement Calendar in future years. The one for 2010 was good quality and had sturdy covers, but the 2011 edition has card stock covers, thinner pages, a smaller spiral, and no lines within the day itself. The new feature is a slipcase, which is of no use to me. I still appreciate the lovely paintings and the quotes however.
The Reading Woman 2011, although published by the same company, is no substitute for last year's calendar, Women Who Dare.
I was disappointed. I need those daring women.
I love this calendar!! It will give me a daily dose of gorgeous artwork in addition to my notations - what a nice way to start 2011!
If your wife, girl friend, or female relative is a reader, this is the engagement calendar you must give her.
If you are an avid reader you must purchase this calendar. I finally found an engagement calendar that is the perfect size and grids of weeks and months that suit my needs. I would recommend purchasing this calendar for yourself and will make a great gift for someone or even your book club members.
I have purchased this engagement calendar for the past several years and love it. The art is beautiful, and the quotes are thoughtful. However, in past years the calendar had a hard cover and a wide spiral binding that made turning the pages easy without tearing them. The pages were heavy, which means you could write on them without inscribing the pages below the one on which you were writing.
This year, the physical aspects of the book are not as high quality. The covers are much lighter, a heavy cardstock instead of cardboard. The binding is the metal comb type, which makes the pages more difficult to turn without tearing them and less convenient for checking past and future dates. The pages themselves are thinner and glossier. This year the calendar comes encased in cardboard sleeve. I would prefer no sleeve and a return to a higher quality product.
The calendar is still very beautiful - I only detracted a star for the changes. I just wanted to make other consumers aware that the calendar is not quite as nice as it was in years past.
